In addition to proclaiming the gospel, our Zosap missionaries understood the value and necessity of medical care on the mission field. Dr. Fraser (B.Sc. MD), the first missionary physician to arrive in Mizoram, did so in 1908. He had disagreements with the Bawrhsap on slavery while working in the medical field and was forced to return in 1912. In the absence of any doctors or nurses, Rev. EL Mendus (Pu Mena) understood the importance of having a hospital (Damdawi in) and started to take actions by praying.
Compounder, Pu D. Thianga relocated the dispensary he established to Durtlang in 1924. On February 22, 1928, Dr. John Williams (Pu Daka) arrived in Mizoram and turned the former Theological School into a hospital. The first patient was admitted on March 6, 1928, and the hospital was given the name “Welsh Mission Hospital.” The medical staff consisted of Pi Tlawmkungi, the first female nurse in Mizoram, Pu Daka (Dr. John Williams), and Pu D. Thianga (Compunder).
The hospital was than handed over to the Presbyterian Kohhran Synod Moderator Pu JM Lloyd by Pi Puii (Dr. GP Roberts) on behalf of the Welsh Presbyterian Mission, Mizo District in 1928 February 22 at Durtlang. To this day, the 22nd of Feburary is regarded as Hospital Day in order to remember this event. After 30 years, the name of the hospital was changed form “Welsh Mission Hospital” to ‘Presbyterian Church Hospital” and the name remained for a long time until the 1st of January 2012 where the hospital was renamed “Synod Hospital” for the final time.
By the grace of God, the hospital grew and under his guidance, there are 304 staff members working in the hospital, out of which there are 31 Doctors (22 of them being Specialists) 129 Nurses, 24 Para-Medical Staff and other 120 workers and as per the report of September 2022, there are 355 beds in the hospital.
The Welsh Missionaries also ran Nursing School in Synod Hospital while spreading the Gospel and worked to achieve two goals: 1. To treat patient regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, culture and relgion 2. To produce the best nurses with Christian teaching and values.
Synod Hospital, being a Mission Hospital rather than a private hospital dedicated itself to spread the Word Of God and the idea of treating every patient equally regardless of who they are is the core belief of the people who founded the hospital and the motto of the hospital is “In His Footstep”. The Nursing Ministry grew over time and with the effort of Synod, it became B.Sc Nursing College overtime and thus produce good and reliable Christian Nurse every year.
The hospital opened a clinic outside its area namely –
1. Dr Fraser’s Clinic: Located in Mission Veng, Doctors with Specialist would sit here every day and even give vaccines to women, children, and pregnant women as well.
2. Millenium Centre Clinic: Located in Millenium Centre, Specialist would rotate every day for different parents and give vaccinations to women and children as well but due to Covid 19, the clinic remain closed till today.
Administration:
The hospital is under the administration of the Hospital board that is a part of the Presbyterian Church, Mizoram Synod. The Hospital Director is the secretary under the Moderator Chairman who is a member of the Synod Hospital Board. There are 8 Synod Ex-officio and 7 appointed members in the Hospital Board who represents the Presbyterian Church. The Hospital Board would held two meetings once a year and there is the Board Executive Committee (BEC) who would sit together when there are agendas to be discussed. The Hospital Board and the BEC members would work together in taking care of the Hospital itself.
Financial:
Synod Hospital is expected to take care of its financial needs by itself. The salary of the staff members and the cost of maintaining the hospital is expected to be provide through the income of the hospital itself. But buying machines or heavy construction work is undertaken through the financial support of the Synod Budget. Another fanatical support came from churches and private donations which greatly helps in the survival and flow of the Hospital.
Financial support would come from Charity Funds and private donations which provided help for patients who are financially struggling as well.
